MagiCuba is a five-day, city-wide magic festival run in partnership with Cuba’s Ministry of Culture, featuring some of the greatest magicians in the world and a line-up of Cuban magicians rarely seen outside of their own country. It includes six shows at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba on its two famous stages in Havana’s Plaza de Revolución, eight nightclub shows across the capital, a special performance at the Circo Nacional de Cuba, five full days of magic and music at the MagiCuba headquarters venue in Old Havana, as well as street performances in the old town’s famous plazas.
But that’s not all.
During the festival, there will also be a conference for magicians at the infamous Hotel Nacional, where gangster Meyer Lansky once held a very different Havana Conference for his notorious associates. The hotel was once the home-away-from-home to some of the most famous mobsters, movie stars, pop stars and politicians of the 40’s and 50’s. This will be no ordinary magic convention. You’ll spend precious little time in windowless conference rooms. The MagiCuba Conference will open with a fabulous welcome reception hosted by the Cuban magicians and circus acts.
There will be a bunch of exceptional MagiCuba Sessions (lectures, talks, interviews, etc.). There will be Magic & Mojitos each afternoon, a sort of happy hour meets table-magic event. MagiCuba even combines a cultural walking tour of Old Havana with pop-up street magic. Plus, MagiCuba is packed with optional events like the Magic, Rum & Cigar Dinner. Where else can you watch world class magic while sipping Cuban rum and smoking Habanos cigars? And let’s not leave out the VIP Circo de Cuba Experience, where attendees will interact with the talented folk at the Cuban Circus, which celebrates its 50th year during MagiCuba. To see and hear what the organizers have to say, watch this clip.
Perhaps the real star of MagiCuba is Havana itself. There are numerous Havana tour options for non-magicians (and a discounted non-magician registration fee), so most magicians are bringing family and friends … and numerous non-magicians are signing up on their own. Many attendees are also planning to arrive early or stay on after MagiCuba to travel outside Havana to see more of what the island has to offer and there are travel experts ready to assist. Since U.S. citizens are still prohibited from traveling to Cuba for tourism, MagiCuba may be the only legal way (and most fun way for magic-lovers) for Americans to visit this magical island nation.
What you need to know...
All-inclusive travel packages are available on the MagiCuba website, along with Cuban visas. And travel to MagiCuba is fully authorized U.S. Citizens by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and OFAC under general license CFR § 515.567, which covers travel-related transactions and other transactions that are directly incident to organization of and participation in “public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions.”
