A Rose is Just a Rose

Hocus Pocus is advertised as a show for “all ages”, that is, it is good for audiences aged from eight to eighty. And it is.

Although some of my previous blog entries (okay, all of them) focus on the intellectual and artistic thoughts that have been running through my head since we have been putting this show together, in the end, it comes down to the magic. And I, for one, believe that magic is magic is magic.

Of course, those interested in semiotics may interpret that statement differently, more in the manner of Gertrude Stein’s famous dictum, “A rose is a rose is a rose”, and they would be right.

But sometimes a rose is just a rose, and magic is just magic, something universal that appeals to all.

There is just something about magic—the pure essence of it—that will prompt a little boy, whether he is eight or eighty, to ponder the life of the hummingbird that must be the motive power inside the glistening silver ball that hovers above the stage.

A flight of fancy I know. Thank heavens.

Hocus Pocus is now on stage through to Dec 31 at Soulpepper. Tickets & Schedule
